Campbelltown City Band

Our Mission

Campbelltown City Band exists to provide high quality musical entertainment to the community in the Campbelltown area, and to provide musical development opportunities for members.

Profile

Campbelltown City Band is situated in the north-eastern suburbs of Adelaide - a corridor of long-standing and successful brass bands. Our membership is drawn from a wide cross-section of the Adelaide community, from the young to the "not-so-young". Above all we are a friendly band and strive to ensure that all members are encouraged and supported in their musical endeavours and that the band environment is enjoyable.

In recent years, the band has been led by Peter Monk, Stuart Jones (renowned Australian soprano cornet/trumpet player and former Ern Keller winner), David Barker (recently appointed principal cornet of Darebin City Brass - Preston Band) and Des O'Neill, who conducted the band for many years in the 1980s and 90s.

Chris Bowman was appointed Musical Director in June 2005 and immediately went about addressing the future of the band. The mission and purpose of the band was readdressed as too was the appearance. Campbelltown had a proud tradition dating from the 1960s of red military style jackets and white pith helmets. Chris could see this was not attractive to prospective new members and certainly not to the younger ones. With the assistance of the Campbelltown City Council a new modern uniform was purchased. The blue jackets also better reflected the Council colours.

Chris brought a new enthusiasm to the band and the members responded brilliantly. A few successful community engagements also lifted morale and skills and new players started to come through the doors.

In late 2006 when Chris moved interstate, Danny Dielkens was appointed Musical Director and continued this great work with his infectious enthusiasm. However his move to a permanent musical position in Melbourne meant the band once again was looking for a new leader.

In April 2007 Campbelltown City Band was excited to be able to appoint Al Kidney as Musical Director. Al has generated much excitement amongst the members who are even practicing at home during the week! A most successful concert in June 2007 announced to all that Campbelltown City Band had indeed been reborn and was capable of providing high quality, entertaining brass band music for the community.

The band is affiliated with the South Australian Band Association (SABA) and around the late 1990s competed in the C Grade competitions. With the influx of new players and with new learners we recently competed in the D Grade section at the 2007 State Band Championships at Tanunda.

In a little over twelve months, the Campbelltown City Band has reinvented itself. We have appraised what a brass band could mean to the 21st century community and have adapted willingly.

About Us

Torrens Brass

With the re-birth of Campbelltown, the establishment of a learners’ band was a first priority.

Torrens Brass is the new training band of Campbelltown City Band and is fully supported by the band and the Campbelltown Council.

This has been so successful in engaging the youngsters that many persuaded their parents to join up and learn too. What a turn around! In 2007 Sarah Butler was appointed MD of Torrens Brass. She had previously had great success with the learners group from Hahndorf Town Band and Campbelltown were thrilled to gain her services.

In 2008 Al Kidney took over this band when Sarah was appointed to K&N Youth Band and under his careful encouragement the players’ skills are continuing to expand.
