More about Peter

Peter began learning tenor horn through the Klemzig brass band, through their learners program at the age of 8. A bit later on when gifted a trumpet at primary school he switched to cornet with the Klemzig band and played that up to the age of 15.

Peter continued trumpet at high school – Rostrevor College and joined the band there. Playing in both the Rostrevor and Klemzig brass bands was not only a brilliant social activity but it was here that Peter developed a passion for musical performance. Trumpet however became somewhat of a struggle so the move onto trombone was made along with picking up a music subject to complete matriculation , this was done along with lessons at Flinders st school of music.

After gaining top awards for matriculation music, Peter started studies at the newly formed course which was a B.A. in music performance. Peter’s love of brass bands continued and was extended to orchestral, wind ensemble and jazz.  It was during this time that Peter won many state championships as well as a National title as well as 5 consecutive performances at the prestigious Ern Keller brass player of the year. He was also the youngest member to be awarded the SABA badge of merit.

After a relatively short stint with the Navy Band, Peter Joined the SA music branch as Instrumental music teacher based at Pt Pirie and conducted the Pt Pirie brass band . On return to Adelaide Peter was employed as a low brass specialist and eventually applied for a position as music coordinator and brass band instructor on the island of Nauru.  Peter was awarded life membership and more recently fellowship of the association, Peter still remains as teacher with the now called Instrumental Music service and teaches all brass and woodwind. Peter still plays with the Kensington & Norwood band although on BBb tuba.
