What a star studded performance our 2020 Fringe concert turned out to be. Not only did it feature one of Australia’s (via New Zealand) best cornet players, Kevin Joughin, but Hugh Jackman (channelled by M.D. Peter Smith) led us to the revolutionary barricades of the 1832 Paris uprising. Compere Viv Little went weak at the knees. No Miserables in this audience.
It was a privilege to accompany Kevin in a selection of music which show-cased both his technical ability (La Virgen de Macarena, This Is My Story) and mastery of phrasing and tone in slower pieces (Body and Soul, Georgia, Con Te Partiro) And he proved that he isn’t just a virtuoso soloist, playing a duet with lead euphonium, Steve Packer (You Raise Me Up), a trio with Julie Dorey and Alicia Ludi-Shutz (Flying High) and a quartet with Julie, Alicia and Wayne Jackson (Mr. Sandman).
Campbelltown’s third Fringe performance opened with the stirring fanfare Laudes Domini which set the scene for an afternoon of classic jazz (Fever) selections from popular musicals (Les Miserables, Grease, Godspell) and a tribute to Kevin’s origins (Hine e Hine). Elvis made a return to the building, to Nola Brockhouse’s delight (wife of Bb Tuba life member Brenton) and a rollicking finale (Bad Leroy Brown) sent the audience home with smiling faces.
